Albania is easy to explore by car. The main roads between Tirana, Durrës, Shkodër, Berat and the south coast are good, and a car lets you reach beaches and mountain villages that buses do not go to. Here is what you need to know before you drive.
Documents you need
- Your driving licence (and an International Driving Permit if it is not in English)
- Your passport
- The rental agreement and the car documents, which we give you
Main road rules
- Drive on the right.
- Speed limits: 40 km/h in towns, 80 km/h on main roads outside towns, 110 km/h on motorways. Watch the signs, limits change often.
- Seatbelts are required for everyone in the car.
- Do not use your phone while driving.
- Do not drink and drive. The alcohol limit is very low.
- Police often check speed with radar, especially on the Tirana to Durrës highway.
What roads are like
Motorways and main roads are in good condition. Mountain roads, for example to Theth or along the Llogara Pass, are narrow with many bends, so plan more time. In villages, watch out for animals and people on the road. In Tirana, traffic is busy at rush hour and roundabouts can feel chaotic. Drive calmly and give way.
Tolls
The only toll road is the A1 motorway toward Kosovo (the Kalimash tunnel). It costs about €5 for a car.
Fuel
Petrol stations are everywhere along main roads. Most take cards, but carry some cash in the mountains.
Parking
In Tirana city centre, parking is limited. Use paid parking garages or hotel parking. Never park where it is not allowed, the police tow cars.
